Gulf Wars.... Again
Mar. 11th, 2005 12:23 pmWell it's that time of the year again. Wet Wars is one of those things that I think I will never give up on. No matter how disallusioned, jaded and cynical with the SCA I become, gulf wars is MY war. And though I dont get excited about going off to war too much these days (last year was my first pennsic so that doesn't count :P ) There are so many memories at this war. It seems every time I dwell on those years past I find myself bursting with some emotion or another. Anger, Fear, Excitement, Wonder, Anticipation, Frustration. Every year when it rains, between the cursing and wishing for JUST ONE F*C&ING DRY G.WARS!, I find myself intoxicated with the mississippi draught. I think this may be my year for fencing too. I know I'm being over confident but I've won tourneys in Meridies before. I've won tourneys at wars before. But I've yet to break into the final 4 in the Trimarian tourney at G.W., made semi's that last couple of years but I think I might have a shot at that final four this time. no matter what, I'll have a hell of a time unleashing the fury of my atomic eye blasts. Another thing is the open bouting. They always seem to end up as little teaching sessions which is just great. I'm pretty comfortiable with my abilities and I enjoy teaching but I'm just not ready to take (full time) students yet. So those side of the field mini sessions are the best for me. It's great to see somebodys eyes light up when you can give them a little tweek that helps it come together. Example there is this guy that I've ended up fighting on the side every year (a John from Merd.) last year when we fought I couldn't tell any big differencces in this fighting from the year before. I didn't do anything, He wanted to keep fighting so we did. Over the course of several days I just kept pushing him and changing up my game. Then sometime mid week we were sparring and I actually saw it happen. I was looking right in his eyes when he broke is plateu, how fricking cool is that. I dont know, anyway I've blathered on enough. lunch time. :)
